PCB Assembly is the process of attaching electronic components to a printed circuit board.
Printed circuit board is a device that is used to connect electronic components in electrical equipment and machinery. PCBs are inexpensive, and can be highly reliable. Once the PCB is completed then electronic components can be attached to produce a printed circuit assembly.
PCBs are present in most of the electrical equipments such as computers, i-Pods, TVs, etc.
Based on the modern requirements most of the companies always in look out for best assembling technology and services.
There are three ways to perform PCB assembly.
* Surface mount assembly
* Conventional PTH Assembly
* Box-build, Electro-Mechanical Assembly
Surface mount assembly technology emerged in 60s and evolved in 1980s. Components have metal tabs and can be soldered easily to the board. It is widely used nowadays.
Process involved in Surface mount assembly:
Solder paste is applied to PCB via solder paste stencil. Surface mount components are placed on to the solder paste deposit, where the component will be held by the tack of the paste. Heat is then applied by way of reflow solder to form the solder paste into permanent joint with the component.
Surface mounting has a high degree of automation, reducing labor costs and greatly increasing production and quality rates.
Conventional PTH Assembly is Plated through-hole technology includes components with leads attached. This is an expensive technique. The components are inserted with the provision of drilled holes in a circuit board. It is the most efficient boards.
Box-build, Electro-Mechanical Assembly technology involves the use of custom metalwork, wire harnesses and looms, cable assembly, and molded plastics.
Both Surface mounting and Plated through-hole methods are used to get desired result. The surface mount techniques take up less space and will go largely unstressed. The hole mounting can provide needed strength for any components which are likely to endure any physical stress.
Once the printed circuit board or PCB has been built it will be tested in a number of different ways. The printed circuit boards may have a conformal coating. The Coating provides a protective layer which helps prevent corrosion and leaking current due to condensation.
