There has been ongoing concern over the impact that Apple’s iPhone range might have on Verizon’s network. This smartphone is undoubtedly the cream of the crop but naysayers have complained that it might compromise the quality of the service for other users and overwhelm an infrastructure which was not built with such a data-intensive mobile in mind.
Despite the sceptics, it is the opinion of many a cell phone expert that the iPhone family is actually able to thrive on Verizon, not cripple its network. Here are just five of the top reasons why this is the case.
Preparedness
The good thing about Verizon’s lateness in acquiring the iPhone is that it had time to watch its rivals, consider the problems they encountered and plan its own course of action without having to take it on completely untested. Following the first iPhone’s launch in 2007 there was a five thousand percent increase in data use on AT&T over the ensuing three years. This forced the company to spend billions of dollars in improving its networks so that it could cope with growing demand.
Existing Smartphone Support
On the other hand, Verizon may not have launched the iPhone on its network as soon as AT&T but that does not mean that its portfolio of products was completely devoid of high-end handsets. Models like the HTC Incredible, Motorola Droid X and Samsung Fascinate helped to pave the way for future launches and proved that Verizon’s network could make the most out of these smartphones and their features without coming to a grinding halt. In fact, Verizon has been a long-term supporter of the BlackBerry range, which precedes the iPhone by several years and has been putting its data network through its paces throughout.
iPhone Data Usage Levels
Just because the iPhone was one of the first handsets to make things like web access, video streaming and app downloading on the move common and desirable features, does not mean that the people who spend their cash on an Apple handset are actually going to consume the most data. In fact, the opposite is true, with studies from Arieso showing that people who use Android handsets actually chew through up to 126 percent more data than iPhone owners. Many of T-Mobile’s Android users actually get through more than 1GB of data a month, whilst 65 percent of those with an iPhone use no more than 250MB over the same period. It is not necessary to be a cell phone expert to understand how these figures imply Verizon’s ability to handle the iPhone just as well as its rivals.
LTE
Whilst Apple has yet to launch a true 4G compatible iPhone handset, Verizon is ready for when that day comes. For the time being this is actually a benefit because it means the burden of data consumption is shared between more than one network infrastructure. It has been rolling out LTE in a number of territories and this means that pressure on its older 3G networks, which are primarily dedicated to iPhone users, is less significant because cell phones from alternative manufacturers are using an entirely different type of coverage.
The Evidence
So far there is not a jot of evidence that Verizon’s support of the iPhone is any less comprehensive or competent than that of AT&T. In fact, the first months after its rollout were much smoother for users on Verizon than they were when the first 3G-enabled iPhone launched on its main competitor. If 2012 is the year in which Apple chooses to create a 4G-ready iPhone, Verizon is likely to step up to the plate once more.
