In the first 24 hours after the launch of the iPhone 4S, Apple processed more than one million pre-orders. The firm’s previous iPhone pre-order record was set by the iPhone 4 last year, which set the total at 600,000. Responding to the news, Apple’s stock increased on the NASDAQ, from $10.53 to $399.34, a 2.71 percent increase.
“We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,” Phil Schiller, Apple’s Vice president said, “and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do.”
The phone goes on sale in seven countries, along with an iOS 5 update for all Apple users, designed to open up their experience with 200 new features, a faster operating time and improved application access and download. The new 8megapixel camera, 1080p HD video combined with the A5 processor first unveiled in the iPad 2 offers a real step towards the future in battling with its competitors in the smartphone market.
As mobile operators pitch their best deals to attract consumers, Vodafone has already announced it will lower their iPhone 4S contract tariffs to ensure they remain competitive and still offer great value. There may have been a lukewarm response from critics after the iPhone 4S launch which may have led to initial higher prices but the popularity among consumers, many of whom are coming to the end of an iPhone 3GS contract and want something new, perhaps means carriers are surprised by the level of competition, as well as demand.
One element believed to most significant in the popularity of the iPhone 4S is its compatibility. With the iOS5 update comes the iCloud meaning pictures, apps, documents and ongoing work can be synchronised with all other devices. Instead of making users feel out of date an unable to upgrade to a new device, the new operating system allows them to integrate new technology with their existing handset.
But Apple’s domination of the headlines and smartphone users affections might not last for long. Samsung cancelled the launch of the Google Nexus Prime for 11th October out of respect for Steve Jobs after the Apple founder’s death. Now the rumour mill begins again with speculation the launch date will now be 27th October in London. The Nexus Prime will unveil Google’s latest Androis operating system. Known as Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) with a new version that works on both tablets and smartphones utilising the Honeycomb look. So far, message board and forum rumours have suggested the follow up to the Nexus Prime S will have a 4.5” screen capable of showcasing 720p along with new look Google Music and Google +. A multitasking panel and the ability to use anywhere on anything shows Android stepping up to iOS5
The new iPhone 4S might have been a damp squid initially for critics, largely because it wasn’t an iPhone 5, but popularity amongst users has more than made up for it for Apple with the company expected to sell well over 3 million mobile phone offers in the first weekend after launch.
Enthusiasm and anticipation for a new operating system jam-packed with new and innovative features suggests while newspaper headlines might not be filled with Apple review, social media and blogs will. However, the honeymoon might not alst long. Android users hungry for an upgrade of their own will view the Nexus Prime announcement with anticipation. The battle for Christmas is on.
