Can game technology rock the vote?

ROCK THE VOTE

ROCK THE VOTE

We all play games to enjoy our free time, to stay away from day-to-day obligations and to escape into the virtual world, away from the real world problems. Well, there might be some other reason as well, but these ones are the major ones.

Rock the Vote and Xbox

This is where we’re coming straight to the main question in this article- WHY? Why was something that is reality included as an option in the Xbox? Majority of the Xbox users are not even registered to vote (not enough years under their belt). And the other part of the users that have enough years for voting is already informed through their favorite media- Internet and little less by watching the CNN and CBS.

We understand the concern about young people’s needs to get involved into politics and election and that is something we do understand. Expecting them to do this through the Xbox is something that is hardly achievable.

So, what’s Rock the Vote anyway?

If you are from USA and you happen to live under the rock read this paragraph. This is an organization in charge for engaging young people and building the political power. It is not a new organization (they are out there for 2 decades already) and they are a trusted source of all the information’s around the elections. They use Medias that are close to the young population (internet, music, art) to gain their trust and to share the knowledge.

The main goals are to get the young people to register and to start voting. Furthermore, RTV has the goal to let the government and the politicians of all sides to pay attention when it comes to the young people rights and matters of their interest.

Now that we know what is Rock The Vote and now that we clarified some basics, we may shed a new light on this matter. Rock The Vote is not something that is installed solely on your good old Xbox. It is a movement using celebrities, new technologies and music to reach young people.

Rock The Vote and iOS

Few weeks ago (August 22nd) Epic Games (famous Silicone Valley developer) together with Chair Entertainment published the VOTE!!! It is free to download on the Apple app store and it is a game based on the 2012 US elections. There are only two characters- Obama and Romney and they are fighting to get to the White House.

Most of the first reactions are about the fun side of the game and how sometimes the game looks like reality. There are speeches (funny), silly clothes (shades, clown nose, baseball cap) and fights in front of the White House and inside of the Oval Room. Furthermore, throughout the game you will be able to unlock some really hilarious weapons (ice creams, microphones, The Constitution, Balloon of Justice and many more).

The game is an instant hit and it is (at the moment of writing) in the top 20 apps in its category.

Parents be warned- Game is a free download but you are constantly called to buy piles of coins (you must pay these with real money) so go in the app settings and turn off -app purchasing.

What else is there? Oh yes, Rock the Vote is installed in the application which means that you will be able to register yourself for this year’s elections and to do what….Well, VOTE of course. If every 1 young man/women on 100 press the RTV button and register it will be a huge success. Let’s wait and see. Who would say that 5 years ago the gaming would be connected with elections?
