Voice chat is quickly becoming one of the hottest new ways to stay in contact with your friends, family and coworkers. Apps like ooVoo, Tango and Google Plus Hangouts is bringing voice chat to the forefront of social media as well. Most of these apps require a special log in through their own security interface and custom credentials. One of the nice benefits of hooking up through your current portal, such as Google, however, is that you may already have an established identity that is tied to your username. Also your identity on your portal of choice is typically connected to most if not all of your personal and professional contacts. Google’s Gmail is one of the most popular portals on the web today, and GTalk is Google’s popular implementation of voice chat software. Unfortunately, until recently Google users were not able to hook into their Gmail accounts and utilize GTalk over their mobile devices if they were using an iOS enabled device such as iPhone, iPhone Touch or the increasingly popular iPad.
This year a new product called Vtok was released on the Apple store that now allows you to use your Gmail credentials to talk with your friends and relatives on the Google portal system through GTalk. Android users have been able to do this natively for years, so it is quite a selling point for users of Android devices who relied on their Gmail and GTalk capabilities on the Android and were reticent to move to an iOS device due to its lack of GTalk integration. Vtok works very well over all connection types, from 3G wireless mobile connections to WIFI. With the latest update, Vtok now supports the newest fourth generation iPod Touch and iPad 2.
Vtok is not merely a voice chat tool or Google, but it allows full feature support for all of the Google Gmail features that users have come to expect through the Google portal suite. Vtok users can utilize Google Voice to make unlimited phone calls and send SMS messages. This feature alone is worth downloading the product if you have a Google account since it can seriously cut down on your wireless cell phone usage costs every month.
If you are interested in some of the more fun chat features, Vtok provides a wide library of virtual gifts you can use to express yourself in fun ways. All of the emoticons that you have become used to in text chat are also available through Vtok. You can also download virtual chat themes or use the in-app browser for surfing the web or looking up reference information to aid your conversation directly within the Vtok app.
In addition to this, you can also share your location via your GPS location aware device if you wish to broadcast this out to your chat companions. You can also download a browser plugin for Vtok that will allow you to call your friends and coworkers directly from your iOS device. The device is available for download on both Windows PC and Mac.
From a usability and integration perspective with the rest of the iOS environment, it is possible to cut and paste text from your sessions, so it is fully integrated with other apps on your iPad or iPhone. If you find yourself using your phone for customer support issues, and rely on previously written responses, there is now a feature that can save a list of text responses and let you pick which one to send on the fly. So whether you use GTalk as a professional way of communicating with your customers or a way to keep in touch with friends and family, Vtok is worth looking into.
