Intel Aims to revitalize Netbook Evolution

The Netbooks are intended for basic computing tasks, like e-mail and Web surfing. But they have grown larger and more powerful over time, and some users find them sufficiently capable to serve as their primary computers. By keeping netbook screen sizes in check, Intel wants to limit the cannibalization of laptop sales and manage user expectations.

When hardware makers build a small laptop, or netbook, based on the Atom netbook platform, they are generally bound by constraints that limit certain specifications, such as a screen size that doesn’t exceed 10.2 inches. These guidelines are meant to segment the laptop market and define a product category that is different from mainstream laptops.

Other companies hasn’t stopped from trying to give Atom-based netbooks bigger screens and more computing muscle. For example, Dell sells an Atom-based laptop with a 12-inch screen, called the Mini 12, that it bills as a “laptop/netbook” and graphics chip maker Nvidia’s GeForce Ion brings high-end multimedia and graphics capabilities to Atom.

Intel wasn’t particularly impressed. Eden believes Intel struck the right balance between computer performance and battery life with the Atom platform. In Intel’s view, bigger screens and more powerful graphics chips upset that carefully constructed balance, even if some users crave these features.

This is where rivals Advanced Micro Devices and Via Technologies sense an opportunity to push their own offerings. Both companies have released chips designed for thin and light laptops with bigger screens, such as Samsung Electronics’s Via Nano-based NC20 laptop and Hewlett-Packard’s Pavilion dv2, which uses AMD’s Athlon Neo processor.

Companies that try to tweak the platform by increasing screen size or adding better graphics also end up reducing the battery life of these machines.

Instead of upgraded specifications, Intel is pushing netbooks towards thinner and lighter demands with Pine Trail, the next version of the platform built around the upcoming Pineview version of Atom. Unlike the current versions of Atom used in netbooks, Pineview integrates a memory controller and graphics core with the processor, features that are designed to boost performance and save power.

Eden said that now they are trying to take this category to the next level and I will not be surprised if you see even the netbook space will be shaped differently because of the better battery life and better performance that they can produce.

Domain Names Exceed 183 million

Today, the Internet now has total base of nearly 183 million domain names says Domain Name Industry Brief published by VeriSign Inc. The number represents a three percent increase over the fourth quarter of 2008 and a 12 percent increase over the same quarter last year.

In India, the total number of domain names was 1.4 million as on March 31, 2009, with approximately 800,000 .com and .net domain names.

However, .com remains the most popular Top Level Domain Names (TLDs) category, followed by .cn (China), .de (Germany) and .net. The composition in fact remains same as in fourth quarter of 2008.
During the quarter, the overall base of .com and .net domain names grew to 92.4 million domain names. This represents a two percent increase from Q4 2008, a jump of nine percent over the same quarter of the previous year, and an increase of 34 percent over the first quarter of 2007.

The analysis shows that the most queried .com domain names sites like Google.com and Yahoo.com are not necessarily the only domain names Internet users rely upon. Rather, there are infrastructure-oriented domain names that support DNS servers, hosting farms or even advertising platforms and the number of DNS queries the infrastructure domain names receive can be in the same range as the many popular end user-oriented domain names with more familiar and recognized domain names.

VeriSign industry brief shows that in addition to provisioning domain names, a domain name registry operator enables users to actually reach those domain names by resolving the domain names to an Internet address that serves the content users seek.

Naming Services at VeriSign. DNS resolution truly comprises the backbone of what makes the Internet operate across the globe. DNS becomes even more critical to the overall infrastructure of the Internet not only as Internet usage grows but also as innovative products and services related to the DNS proliferate.

Google officially launched Google Squared in Labs

Google, the king of Internet search, rolled out an experimental new search product called Google Squared in attempt to generate structured results.

Google has made it clear that Squared is still in pretty early stages. The logo has a nice big Labs title slapped on it, complete with green beaker. Here there is no question that Google doesn’t think this product is ready for prime time. It’s just opening up the lab so we can get used to it

Google Squared does not provide a list of links to Web pages, like with a traditional Google search, but presents information derived from a query in a spreadsheet-like grid called a square.

On Wednesday blog post, Google said that Google Squared could be useful when a user needs to make multiple searches to find the information they want.

Windows 7 Release Date Announced

The guessing game is over! Windows 7, the next major release of the world’s most popular operating system, will be officially available to the public on 22 October.

Now Microsoft is hoping it can avoid the negative press that surrounded the launch of Vista, the last major Windows release, almost three years ago. Windows 7 has been designed to be compatible with Vista so users do not have to invest in new hardware. Customers who buy a new PC with Vista will be offered upgrades to Windows 7.

In order to finish the OS on time, Microsoft plans to wrap up development of the operating system by the middle or end of next month.

Windows 7 promises a major usability improvement on Vista, and a simplification of security measures. Beta testers of Windows 7 have reported that it is faster than Vista.

Microsoft also said without giving specific details that those who purchase PCs running Vista between now and the Release Date will receive either a free or discounted copy of Windows 7.

Sony Music Entertainment to join online music video service Youtube and Universal Music Group

Sony Music Entertainment will join the online music video service Youtube and Universal Music Group.

The move marks the first major record label besides co-founder Universal to sign on to the service to be called Vevo and expected to launch later this year. Sony and Youtube could not immediately be reached for comment.

Sony’s roster of artists includes Beyonce, Kings of Leon and Bruce Springsteen. Earlier this year, Sony signed a deal to provide certain TV shows and films on Youtube.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, and it was not immediately clear whether Sony was doing anything more in the partnership than providing its music to the site.

The deal is a further boost to Google’s efforts to monetize Youtube, which it acquired for $1.65 billion in 2006. YouTube is the No.1 video site in the United States, but the home videos uploaded by its users have proven to be a hard sell with advertisers.

Vevo is exploring additional strategic participation by third-party investors to join as equity partners, the companies said in Thursday’s joint announcement.

Sony Music Entertainment CEO Rolf Schmidt-Holz said in a statement that we share a common vision of offering music videos and other premium video content from some of the world’s greatest artists in an attractive, clean and intuitive environment that appeals to fans and advertisers alike

The Google’s Android OS to be used in mini-notebooks known as – Netbooks

It is predicted that Google’s Android  mobile operating system could be running on 18 to 20 devices by the end of the year

According to Andy Rubin (Google’s senior director for mobile platforms) 18 to 20 phones from eight to nine manufacturers will come with Android OS installed on them by the end of the year.
Android will continue to be open source. Manufacturers will have the option of installing Android “obligation-free” onto their devices, which means the user will have access to the OS but not Google Apps such as Gmail, Google doc, etc.

A second option for manufacturers that sign a distribution agreement with Google will allow them to pre-install Google Apps onto their devices.

The third option knows as the Google Experience opens up the manufacturer’s devices to Google Apps and the Android Market. Phones which fall under the “Google Experience” will also be branded with the Google logo on the physical handset.

A number of companies have announced plans to roll out Android-equipped smartphones. HTC is currently preparing Google Android smartphones for the Chinese and Canadian markets for a June rollout.

On top of this, Android is also being ported onto mini-notebooks which also known as “netbooks,” as an operating system. With research firm IDC estimating that netbook shipments will grow from 11.4 million in 2008 to 22 million in 2009 hence the market represents a potentially massive growth area for Android.

Microsoft Modernize The Search Engine ‘Live’ as -Bing

Microsoft is re-branding its search engine currently called “Live” – as “Bing” as part of a range of steps to make its search technology more appealing to consumers.

Microsoft’s inability to organically increase its share in search was the key driver behind the company’s pursuit last year of Yahoo Inc. (YAHOO). Many investors think Microsoft needs to tap a much bigger audience in order to make its searches more relevant and to attract more advertisers.

Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer unveiled the new search engine at the All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad, Calif. The conference is sponsored by the All Things Digital Web site, which, like this newswire, is owned by News Corp. (NWSA). He also said that Windows 7, the next iteration of Microsoft’s ubiquitous operating system, might see faster adoption than Vista, the most current version.

Microsoft wanted to be better at Internet search but conceded that it might take years to gain market share, even with the new search product. A strong consumer brand for search was a good starting point.

Bing looks different from its predecessor and rivals’ search engines, with search results displayed on the left hand side of the Web page.
Bing targets four distinct categories of search: shopping, local, travel and health.

Each search will launch a more detailed range of search prompts by category, which attempt to narrow down the consumer’s choices.
Bing also introduces more non-textual content, such as video, to its user interface, And information such as customer service numbers more prominent in search results, and allows customers, by hovering over a search result, to preview a site. Introducing new categories to the search engine could help advertisers reach consumers more efficiently.
