Domain names are used as identification labels to specify the ownership. Today, internet has become the center of interest for businesses, governments and people around the world. As, many domain names are already being registered hence users are in search for other acceptable names, using Web-based search features. When Every time a new domain is registered, Domain Name system server must be configured to give out address information for that domain. So that users can configure the websites in that domain. DNS domains are often stored in the Domain Name System together with IP addresses of the host. The top-level domains (TLDs) are the highest level of domain names of the Internet. A hostname is a domain name that has at least one associated IP address.
There are two types of top-level domains:
- Two-letter country domains (ccTLDs)
- Three-letter domains (gTLDs)
A country code top-level domain (ccTLD) is an Internet top-level domain generally reserved and used based on country. Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) is responsible for policies and operation of the ccTLD domain such as .in (India), .uk (United Kingdom), etc.
Generic domains (gTLDs) are created and overseen by the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). Each top-level domain is maintained and serviced technically by an administrative organization operating a registry. The generic domains were .com, .edu, .gov, .int, .mil, .net, and .org. Recently ICANN, the international regulatory body for Web architecture had discussed the expanding the list of top-level domain names.
